The only 100% composting toilets on the market

Company

Ekolet is a 100% Finnish, 100% family-owned company whose dry toilets compost 100% and are so carefree that they cause 0% worry.

Our vision, our mission

A good toilet is an important part of enjoyable cottage life

That is why it must first and foremost be comfortable and carefree to use. Odourless, of course, but also Finnish quality and, as a matter of course, environmentally friendly.

Waste and emptying the toilet are a problem for many cottages, so instead Ekolet produces around a wheelbarrow of ready-to-use, nutrient-rich mulch every year – and emptying it is no heroic feat.

We designed Ekolet so you’ll be happy with it.

Ekolet as a company

Focus on other things

The basic idea behind Ekolet has remained exactly the same since the beginning: we want to offer you an environmentally friendly toilet that really works, even in demanding conditions. And this functionality must be presented to the user in such a way that they have to think about these things as little as possible. Because there are more important things.

Since 1990

The first Ekolet toilet was built back in the 1980s and Ekolet was established in 1990. Over the years, the basic idea behind the toilet has been refined, but it still relies on the same superior functionality: no other composting toilet on the market composts 100% of its waste in the toilet itself.

Further upstream

Ekolet is a family business, now run by Kalle Ylösjoki, son of the inventor of the toilet, Matti Ylösjoki. You can reach Kalle on +358 10 200 6260 – just in case you have any questions about composting toilets or how to choose one. You can also send your question by text message if it comes at a time when the sun has already set.

Invention

This is how Ekolet was born

Like many brilliant inventions, Ekolet was born out of practical need. In the late 1980s, Matti Ylösjoki, a graduate engineer, was fed up with the smelly and high-maintenance dry toilet in his summer cottage and wanted a model that went a little further. To his surprise, however, there were no advanced models on the market, but mainly large collection containers that tried to remove the liquid and odours with litter. They also always required, in addition to the litter, post-composting and the collection and treatment of liquids.

Matti Ylösjoki started to search for information and develop a toilet that was as carefree and easy to use as possible, and also odourless. After a few years of planning, he built a prototype of a four-compartment composting toilet for his summer cottage in Vihti, where the idea was that no separate post-composting would be needed, but would take place in the toilet itself. He also wanted the liquid treatment to take place in the digester itself. The third requirement was that the ventilation should be so efficient and so well designed that the toilet room would be completely odourless. To Ylösjoki’s surprise, when the prototype was put into operation, the first version worked so well that no further versions were needed.

After happily using the uniquely functional composting toilet he had developed, Ylösjoki began to think that many others might be looking for one and would be happy to have an odourless and worry-free toilet. Ylösjoki decided to commercialise his toilet and in 1990 he founded the company Ekolet and patented the device.

Today, Ekolet has already provided thousands of Finns and very many foreigners with enjoyable and carefree sessions. Since then, the summer cottage people who own their own Ekolet toilet have been able to concentrate on something other than their toilet.
