The only 100% composting toilets on the market

Frequently asked questions

What kind of toilet is best?

The best toilets are as easy to use and maintain as possible – in other words, worry-free.

The best digesters produce 100% composted soil, so no separate secondary composting is needed. They do not require separate urine separation buckets, but separate the liquids in the composter itself. The separation of liquids is so efficient that even a hand-held spray can be used and they even work without litter, meaning that litter is not always required after use.

The liquid separation and air circulation are designed to be so efficient that they are completely odourless. There is no need to collect overflow liquids for post-treatment, the excess liquid has either evaporated or been purified in the toilet to a level of purity that can be fed directly to the plants.

What kind of toilet should you get for your cottage?

It’s a good idea to get a toilet that’s as easy to use and maintain as possible, so you can concentrate on more pleasant things than fiddling with the toilet – because there can be a surprising amount of worry about odours and malfunctions.

The fact that you don’t have to worry about who you’re going to hit when you empty the woodpile is also of great value – it’s just a matter of dealing with the soil.

The toilet is an investment in your comfort, as it is usually used several times a day. Our recommendation is to invest in a quality, long-lasting and worry-free product and concentrate on enjoying the summer.

What is a good puucee building for cottage conditions?

A good puucee building is one that is sturdy and easy to assemble. The lower parts of the wood should be made of durable wood to withstand rain splashes and being covered in snow in winter.

The easiest buildings to assemble are those that are delivered as prefabricated floor, wall and roof elements, making assembly quick and easy, even for people with no previous assembly experience. Roof elements should also have a roofing felt attached so that it does not have to be purchased and installed separately.

The toilet building should be supplied with all the necessary parts for installation to ensure a smooth installation and to save extra trips to the hardware store.

What to consider when buying a toilet?

Consider at least these:
– Is the toilet easy to use. The easiest to use are toilets without a separate urine collection bowl
– Is the toilet ventilated efficiently enough to make it truly odourless
– Is the toilet easy to maintain, i.e. does the toilet waste need to be post-composted separately and does the overflow need to be collected in separate containers and post-treated
– Is the toilet long-lasting and reliable? Is the use of litter or disposable parts (e.g. incineration bags for burning toilets) compulsory
– Is the toilet ecological
– How expensive is it to run the toilet (e.g. does it consume a lot of electricity)
– Is hand washing already taken into account in the toilet solution or does a hand washing point have to be made separately?

Can I also compost food waste in the toilet?

In principle, food waste can be composted in composting toilets. However, kitchen waste often carries small fruit fly larvae into the toilet, which can very easily cause an aesthetic fly problem.

As such, food waste and small fruit flies are not harmful to the composting process itself, but if you want to avoid a fly problem, it is advisable to keep food and toilet composters separate.

What is required of a toilet in challenging conditions?

If you are buying a toilet for challenging conditions, make sure that it is also designed to be safe, durable and easy to maintain. The parts must be designed to stand the test of time and withstand frost and sea conditions. Metal parts should be either stainless or hot-dip galvanised metal and plastic parts should be made of materials that are resistant to UV light from the sun.

In rocky and rocky terrain, it is difficult to transport and dig below the surface. In this case, it is useful if the toilet does not require separate transport of waste for secondary composting or if there is no need to dig a pit below ground level for a separate liquid container.

It is also very convenient if the toilet does not require the use of a litter tray, which must be purchased separately on site.

What kind of problems can a toilet in a cottage cause?

The most serious problems affecting the use of toilets are the smell and the difficulty of using them, which leads to inefficiency and unhygienic conditions.

Some toilets have separate urine collection bowls in the seats, which can be difficult to keep clean and are prone to clogging. They also make the toilet more challenging to use, especially for children, and are not aesthetically pleasing.

If the toilet is difficult to maintain, i.e. it requires a separate liquid tank emptying and after-treatment, or requires unfinished compost waste emptying and after-composting from time to time, maintenance may be forgotten or not carried out on time, resulting in additional problems and odour nuisance.

Why choose a composting dry toilet for your cottage?

Composting dry toilets are a natural solution that allows the treatment of toilet waste in the cottage environment without the need for external infrastructure (water or sewage system).

A good quality composting toilet is convenient to use, reliable and overall affordable when compared to a water toilet, for example, which requires an expensive water system, either a septic tank or a sewer system.

Can composting digester soil be used to fertilise food?

Yes, you can. It is a very good and nutrient-rich soil. The idea of this may be difficult for some people, but there is no real obstacle. Of course, the compost in the composting toilet must be completely post-composted.

What else is needed to set up a toilet other than what is included in the Ekolet subscription?

If you buy the Ekolet toilet as a package, i.e. including the building, you only have to take care of the foundation under the building and the toilet.

If you buy only the toilet, in addition to the foundation and the toilet building, you also have to buy the ventilation pipe needed for the toilet.

What does it mean that Ekolet is hassle-free?

The convenience of an Ekolet toilet means that it is very easy to use and maintain.
With the four-compartment Ekolet toilets, the post-composting of waste and liquid handling is done in the unit itself, so the user does not need to perform separate post-composting or collect liquids in canisters for post-treatment. In fact, there is little maintenance work for the user other than emptying the finished composting slurry and giving it to the plants.

The Ekolet Onni single-blade toilet needs separate post-composting, but even here, post-composting is made as easy as possible thanks to the septic tank bag. This means that the user does not have to empty the toilet through a small hatch throughout the summer, but once full, the sack is closed and tipped over to the composting site for post-composting and a new sack is introduced into the toilet.

In Ekolet toilets, the liquid is separated in the toilet itself, i.e. there are no unhygienic urine collection bowls or urine collection bowls that require extra cleaning. All needs are met in a single hole, and the Ekolet toilet does not even require the use of a litter tray when in use. Many people use a little litter for aesthetic reasons, but if you run out or don’t want to use litter, Ekolet will do the trick.

What does it mean in practice for me that Ekolet also takes care of post-composting?

In Ekolet’s four-compartment digesters, the post-composting takes place in the digester itself. This means that the user does not have to empty and transfer the semi-finished waste separately for post-composting.
When one of the four compartments of an Ekolet toilet is full, a new compartment is rotated in its place. Initially, when the toilet is put into operation, the first four years will be spent filling the compartments. Once all the compartments are full, the oldest compartment is left to compost in peace, and is easy and tidy to empty.

Once the composting process is complete, the surface of the waste is reduced to about half of its original level, so one tray produces just under a wheelbarrow of finished nutrient-rich soil.

What is the basis of Ekolet’s odourlessness?

Ekolet’s odourlessness is based on the fact that the liquid separation and air circulation in Ekolet toilets are designed to be so efficient that all odours are removed from the ventilation pipe and do not leak into the toilet room or at ground level.

How long is the warranty on Ekolet products and what does it cover?

Ekolet offers a 20-year frame warranty for plastic composting bins, a 10-year warranty for metal parts and a 1-year warranty for other parts. The warranty covers technical defects and defective components in materials and workmanship.

Can I install an Ekolet toilet myself?

Ekolet toilets and the buildings designed for them are easy to install, which is why most customers assemble and install the toilets and buildings themselves.
However, if you feel that you do not want to, do not have the time or are unable to do the installation work yourself, it is advisable to have the work done by a local builder, for example.
