Composts odorlessly indoors
Ekolet Aino is an easy-to-use and odorless composting toilet for indoor use in a summer cottage. It composts toilet waste into completely finished nutrient-rich soil. This is possible because post-composting also takes place in the device. Its unique carousel solution allows you to spin out a new compartment every time the previous one is full, and you'll soon have a wheelbarrow full of mulch for your plants every year.

Description

Functional elegance for interiors

The composting toilet consists of a sturdy porcelain seat in the toilet room and a four-compartment rotating composting tank under the floor. The compartments have filtered intermediate floors, and under them an evaporation level for the liquids and a bottom basin for biological purification of the liquids. The toilet room is ventilated via the seat. If a shower is in the same room, a vapour extraction valve installed at the roofline shall be connected to the compost tank lid.

For year-round leisure use

Much of the liquid evaporates with the air circulation and the remaining liquid can be absorbed directly into the ground as it is biologically purified by the liquid levels in the device. The capacity of one compartment of the toilet is sufficient for about four people for 2-3 months per year. Additives such as dry material, are not required after use and a hand shower is also possible. The toilet can also be used in winter.

Odorless in all conditions

Ventilation of the composting toilet needs to beat the ventilation of the building. Ekolet Aino is designed to win this battle. Electrically controlled air circulation keeps the toilet completely odourless. The fan only needs about 4 watts of power, which means it can be connected to a solar power system.

Easy to maintain

When a compartment is full, a light layer of peat or mulch is applied to the surface and a new compartment is rolled out for use. Four compartments allow a sufficient time for natural composting, so that the 100% composted nutrient-rich soil that is emptied can be applied directly to the plants.

A full compartment will yield about 50 litres, almost one wheelbarrow, of soil. The final leachate that has been biologically purified in the toilet system, can be led into the summerhouse greywater system or, for example, into an underground rock pit from where the plant roots can obtain nutrients. Leachate should not be discharged or directed into lakes, which are already rich in nutrients.

Long-lived and nature-friendly

The Ekolet Aino composting toilet is reliable because of its simple design. There are no parts that would block or prevent the toilet from working. The toilet is made of durable and long-lasting materials. The plastic parts are made of UV-protected polyethylene plastic, the metal parts are made of stainless or hot-dip galvanised steel and the metal wheels are made of aluminium. The Ekolet Aino indoor toilet has a 20-year frame warranty from the date of purchase. The toilet includes a sturdy porcelain seat and an underfloor rotating four-compartment composting tank.

Installing an Ekolet toilet is easy. You don’t need any special skills such as electrical, plumbing or drainage. All the necessary parts and instructions are included in the sales package. It comes with 6 m ø 100 mm ventilation pipe and the necessary accessories for penetrating the roof.

Space requirements for the porcelain seat and compost bin

The toilet room will have a sturdy porcelain seat in white. It has a width of 357 mm, a height of 400 mm and a seat height of approx. 440 mm.

A vertical connecting pipe runs from the porcelain seat to the compost tank under the floor, which has a diameter of 1340 mm. The distance between the centre of the connecting pipe (inner diameter ø 200 mm, outer diameter ø 200 mm) and the centre of the compost bin is 370 mm, 230 mm from the rear edge of the seat and 290 mm from the front edge.

Under the floor of the toilet room, there must be a space of at least 140 cm x 140 cm in area and at least 65 cm in height for a compost container. If the dwelling is heated during the winter, the space for the compost bin should also be enclosed and insulated. It is also worth installing a small thermostatically controlled radiator to keep the space on the plus side. If the composting process is to be kept efficient all year round, the temperature in the compost bin should be at least +15°C.

The Ekolet Aino compost bin is installed on a flat, non-rusting and load-bearing surface. The maximum total weight of the compost bin is 400 kg and the normal, normal operating weight is 200-300 kg. All parts of the compost toilet can be brought in through a 60 cm wide door.

One side of the composter must be accessible for emptying. Each compartment has its own discharge hatch on the side of the continuously rotating composter. Emptying is most easily done with a smaller than normal field shovel. A full compost locker will yield about a wheelbarrow (50 litres) of fertiliser to be applied directly to the plants.

Ventilation

The toilet room is ventilated through the seat. If there is a shower in the same room as the toilet, the vapour extraction valve on the ceiling must be connected by a pipe to the compost tank (compost tank lid), so that the entire ventilation of the room is circulated through the compost tank. If a separate ventilation system were to be installed in the steam ventilation valve, and if it were more powerful than the ventilation of the toilet, the air could start to flow in the wrong direction, drawing the odours of the toilet into the room.

The composter’s electric fan (12 V / 4 W) blows 20 m3 of air per hour into the ventilation pipe from the composter lid. The ventilation power of the fan can be adjusted to a lower value if desired. The fan requires a 230 V 50-60 Hz socket in a dry indoor environment or a connection to a solar panel system.

The ventilation duct must run upwards at all times so that ventilation is gravity fed even during power cuts. The ventilation pipe should be enclosed and thermally insulated if it runs inside the building structure.

Treatment of liquids

Much of the liquids evaporate with the air circulation. At the purification levels, the biologically purified final effluent can be discharged with the wash water into a grey water system for further purification or, for example, into an underground rock pit around which the plant roots can obtain nutrients. Leachate should not be discharged or directed into lakes, which are already rich in nutrients.
